Undergraduate Academic Advising

Academic advisors are the principal academic resource for undergraduate students in the Elliott School and advise students throughout their entire collegiate experience. They guide students through academic and professional decisions, assist in connecting students with university resources and opportunities, and encourage students to reflect on how their personal journey can inform responsible citizenship and ethical leadership.

Students are assigned an academic advisor based on their last name and are encouraged to engage with their advisor every semester.

Other ways to communicate with an advisor:
Email

In addition to meeting with your advisor, you can also email your advisor questions. Your primary academic advisor is available to answer emails Monday thru Friday during regular business hours, genearly 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.  You can also email [email protected] (our office email account) for more general questions. Email is the best option for short, simple questions (e.g. What date do I register?) and if you have more complex questions (e.g. Could you review my DegreeMAP with me, and discuss my graduation timeline?), we recommend scheduling an appointment.

Note: when emailing any advisor it is important to include your GWID. For security purposes, it is also important to send your message from your GW email account.

Drop-In Advising

Drop-in advising is a great option if you have a quick question or two about a DegreeMAP issue, class scheduling, academic policy clarification, or other concerns that can be addressed briefly. When coming to drop-in advising, you will be assigned to the first advisor on duty who is available rather than your assigned advisor.

WHERE?

Drop-ins are held both virtually (via Blackboard) and in-person (1957 E St. NW, Suite 302).

Click HERE to join virtual drop-ins!

WHEN?

Monday - Tuesday & Thursday-Friday from 2:00 - 4:00 PM
  • *NOTE: During Spring Break, we will not hold drop-in advising hours. From March 25 through April 5th we will hold extended drop-in hours. The times include  10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and  2:00 - 4:00 PM (Monday through Friday).

For more in-depth conversation about curriculum planning, personal issues or concerns, or multiple questions that require more time to respond, please schedule a 30 minute appointment. Thirty minute appointments must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance.

Use this guide to help you choose between drop-ins or making an appointment!
