International Women of Elliott
In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council adopted a landmark resolution affirming the need for women to participate fully in society and global affairs. Across the map, the resolution declares, women must be empowered if we are to establish a more peaceful, secure, and just world.
In accord with this resolution, the Elliott School has launched a leadership group committed to women's advancement in international affairs. I/WE – the GW International Women of Elliott – is designed to raise the global visibility and connectivity of women's leadership in the Elliott community. I/WE brings together alumni committed to women's leadership for robust dialogue on the unique opportunities and challenges to this goal. In addition, I/WE members champion Elliott students focused on women's leadership to ensure those who choose to lead have the resources and tools to do so. To that end, all gifts to I/WE are dedicated to support graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholarships for Elliott students committed to the advancement of women in international affairs. The awards are open to students of all genders.
The I/WE network is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion in international affairs by creating opportunities for students and alumni of all backgrounds to become global leaders.
Leadership
Co-Chair Julie Monaco, BA ’85
Managing Director and Global Head, Public Sector Banking, Corporate Banking Division, Citi, New York
"My Elliott School education is why I have succeeded in a career in global banking. My international affairs degree gave me the foundation of understanding and instilled a passion to continue to explore and learn about all the political and economic challenges my clients in 150+ countries face every day. Throughout my career, I had fantastic mentors and teachers, both men and women, who helped me grow and contribute in a way that would not be possible without them. I look forward to providing more young people who share the I/WE mission with the same opportunities."
Co-Chair Ana M. Guevara, BA ’85
President, AVENTI Associates, Miami
"Our goal with the creation of I/WE is to celebrate the many and significant successes of the Elliott School's diverse alumni across industries, as well as to establish a powerful and influential global network of Elliott alumni, parents, industry leaders, and students who are dedicated to I/WE’s mission. I/WE supports scholarships and fellowships for students of all genders. The awards also inspire future leaders through mentorship and help in launching their careers."
Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley, BA ’80
President, Middle East Policy Council, Washington, D.C.; I/WE Executive Circle Member
"I/WE's mission to support undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships and diversity in I/WE membership and programs is 'mission critical' in helping to attract the best and brightest students to Elliott who will be future leaders in business, public policy, government, and international affairs. As a former Ambassador, I know that ensuring women participate fully in society and in international affairs, as the UN resolution on women declares, is essential to a more peaceful world."
