Rebecca Thompson retired from the U.S. Foreign Service in November 2020. Previously, she was the designated Public Affairs Counselor at U.S. Embassy Caracas and served as Counselor for Educational and Cultural Affairs at U.S. Embassy Mexico City.  Other previous assignments include Director of the Office of Broadcast Services in the Bureau of Public Affairs, Director of the Public Affairs Bureau’s Rapid Response Unit, Foreign Service Board of Examiners, Press Attaché at U.S. Embassies in Manila and San Salvador, and public affairs work in the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs. Her first tours were Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer assignments at U.S. Embassies in Buenos Aires and Seoul.

Mrs. Thompson supports educational exchange programs in the hometown of Senator Fulbright—Fayetteville, Arkansas—through volunteer work at the University of Arkansas and with the American Councils on International Education.  She also serves on the Global Advisory Board of her other alma mater, Lewis and Clark College, from which she holds a BA in French.  In addition to French, she speaks Spanish, Danish, Norwegian, and Korean.
