Professor Alexa Alice Joubin has been appointed Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta, where she is giving a series of public lectures on AI, critical race and trans studies, decolonizing Asian studies, global Shakespeare, and trans and disability studies through film, among other topics. Her two-week residency is co-sponsored by Vice-President of Research and Innovation Distinguished Visitor Fund, Kule Institute for Advanced Study, Dean of Research of the Faculty of Arts, China Institute, Department of Drama, Department of English and Film Studies, Department of Women's and Gender Studies, and Department of East Asian Studies.
One of her public lectures focuses on Building an Inclusive Vocabulary: Trans and Disability Studies through Film. In the interactive workshop sponsored by the Vice-Provost: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, she uses film to illustrate current best practices for how to meaningfully engage marginalized communities. She offers a quick history of representations of disabled and transgender individuals in popular media.
