Council on Foreign Relations Elects Associate Professor Harris Mylonas a Lifetime Member of the Council

The Elliott School is delighted to announce that the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) has elected Elliott School Associate Professor of Political Science and International Affairs Harris Mylonas a lifetime member of the Council. Dr. Mylonas is a foremost expert in the processes of state- and nation-building, political development, and diaspora policy. His prolific and acclaimed work has offered tremendous contributions to our understanding of states’ management of diversity that may originate from national minorities, immigrants, diasporas, or refugees. 

In addition to his professorial duties, Mylonas is Editor-in-Chief of Nationalities Papers and a frequent publisher. He penned the award-winning The Politics of Nation-Building: Making Co-Nationals, Refugees, and Minorities (Cambridge University Press, 2012), and co-authored Varieties of Nationalism: Communities, Narratives, Identities (Cambridge University Press, 2023; with Maya Tudor). He has co-edited Enemies Within: Fifth Column Politics in Comparative Perspective (Oxford University Press, 2022; with Scott Radnitz) and The Microfoundations of Diaspora Politics (Routledge, 2022; with Alexandra Délano Alonso).

Beyond academia, Mylonas made the documentary film Searching for Andreas: Political Leadership in Times of Crisis, and also spearheads the production of a podcast, American Constitutive Stories, in collaboration with Andrew Thompson. This podcast serves as a platform where Americans from different walks of life can share their understanding of their national identity, how it relates to other identities, who they think to be American heroes, and what they see as the most promising connecting tissue of our society in the future.

Mylonas’s perspectives into nationalism and geopolitics have been published in The Washington PostForeign Affairs, Foreign Policy, CNN.comThe Guardian, Los Angeles Times and other media outlets. He has also appeared on BBC, CNN, Voice of America, and CBC Radio, among other outlets in the U.S. and abroad.
