Professor Alexa Alice Joubin has published an exciting new book that offers new methods to study cross-cultural performances that emphasize equity and social justice. Contemporary Readings in Global Performances of Shakespeare includes chapters on Korean shamanism, Turkish modernity, Southeast Asian engagement with Western theatre, Japanese literary translation of the Western canon, Bollywood cinema, Iran, Afghanistan, and the Persian diaspora, Latin America, Arab world, Slavic world, the conflict between Kashmir and India, virtual theatre in Brazil, and teaching Shakespeare in China, Kuwait, and Yemen.

Beyond her latest monograph, Professor Joubin has given multiple presentations, interviews, and demonstrations on her work on AI. In January, she  gave a TED style talk on The Future of AI is Open Culture at GW’s inaugural Leaders Forum, chaired by GW President Ellen Granberg. She was also interviewed on her research on critical AI studies entitled Ghost in the Machine. Her interview also appeared in the latest issue of GW Research Magazine in which she points out that humanistic contributions to AI studies is the capacity to entertain ambiguity and multiple perspectives at once.

In addition, she launched her open-access AI for higher education in a recent demonstration video created by GW’s Media Relations. The design is based on her research on meta-cognition and current pedagogical needs. Her open-source, open-access AI application enhances trust which leads to ethical human-AI collaboration. Her platform gives all stakeholders equal access to adjusting the parameters for outputs for specific use cases. Participatory justice is key to social connections and trust.
