Accessibility at Commencement

Commencement Weekend is a very exciting time for graduates and their families.  We hope to make the weekend comfortable and accessible to all graduates and guests.  As such, several services are available to those who need interpreting services or physical accommodations.

Sign Language Interpreters

Sign language interpreters will be provided at University Commencement on the National Mall on Sunday, May 17.  If you wish to be seated near an interpreter at the ceremony, please call the Office of University Events at (202) 994-7129 to make arrangements for special seating.

Sign language interpreters will be provided at other Commencement Weekend events on an as-needed basis. Please email the Elliott School graduation team at [email protected] as soon as possible, to request an interpreter for the Elliott School Graduation Ceremony on Friday, May 15.

Graduates who use wheelchairs or who have restricted mobility should contact the Office of University Events at (202) 994-7129 as soon as possible to make arrangements for University Commencement.  Please also contact the Elliott School graduation team at [email protected] regarding the Elliott School Celebration by April 19.

Smith Center Seating Map

Guests in Wheelchairs

The section of seating reserved for guests who are wheelchair users or who have restricted mobility, is located in boxes 6 and 10, and at the front of the yellow seats in sections 202-205. Each guest sitting in this area may be accompanied by one additional person.

Guests with Restricted Mobility

The section of seating reserved for guests who have restricted mobility is located at the top of the blue seats in sections 102-104. Each guest sitting in this area may be accompanied by one additional person.

For guests who do not have their own wheelchairs but would feel more comfortable in a wheelchair, the Smith Center has a limited number of loaners on hand. These wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-served basis and may not be reserved ahead of time.  Guests who are interested in this option should go to the Box Office, located on 22nd Street between F and G Streets.

We suggest an early arrival at the Smith Center to ensure that you reach your seats comfortably.  There is no special parking for the Smith Center.  Generally, guests with accessibility needs should be dropped off at the Box Office and the driver should proceed to a nearby campus parking facility.  There will be Smith Center ushers on hand should your guests have questions or need help getting seated.

For questions regarding Spring 2020 graduation, please contact the Elliott School of International Affairs by telephone at 202-994-3002 or email.
