"Talking to a Brick Wall: The US Government’s Response to Public Comments on AI" is the latest peer reviewed paper from Research Professor and Director of the Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub Susan Aaronson. In the piece, published as part of a Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) paper series, Aaronson investigates how the US Government asked for and responded to public concerns about the benefits and risks of open source AI. Using a landscape analysis, Aaronson examines the dialogue between US officials and the public on open foundation model and, ultimately, finds it dysfunctional. She concludes that policy makers need rethink how they engage with their citizens on AI and advocates for alternative approaches to public consultation on AI, including citizen science strategies, which offer greater potential for meaningful public engagement and trust-building.
