The Elliott School Gets a Makeover

October 4, 2017

Students who frequent the Elliott School  may have noticed a few updates. For those who don’t visit every day, we have a news alert: the Elliott School for International Affairs is getting a facelift.

Visitors walking through our doors will be greeted by photos of some of our prominent alumni looking out from the large columns in the lobby. These include U.S. Senator from Illinois, Tammy Duckworth MA ’92, and Elliott School professor and previous U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait, Jordan, and Australia, Edward “Skip” Gnehm BA ’66, MA ’68. Senator Duckworth and Ambassador Gnehm are joined by, former GW President Lloyd Hartman Elliott, for whom the school is named, and President George Washington himself, whose words provide further inspiration to students, faculty, and staff working to make a positive difference around the world.

In addition to the alumni photos, we now have an iconic Elliott School stairway. What used to be a bland, beige mountain has been transformed by color and words showcasing Dean Reuben Brigety's mission: “Building Leaders for the World.”

Students seeking a place to study, meet with friends, or prepare for meetings with their academic and career advisors at Graduate Student Services, can do so in the newly adorned student lounge on the 6th floor. There they will find a mural of photography submitted by Elliott students who traveled last summer to Cuba, Finland, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Myanmar, Russia, and other locations for work, study, and research. (For more student photography, check out our Flickr album here.)

In fact, all of the artwork around the school will be updated as the academic year progresses, highlighting new faces and telling new stories. Keep an eye out for more changes and added color to the Elliott School of International Affairs.
