Before joining the Elliott School in September 1996, Professor Gow taught at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. Prior to that he worked for FAO, the World Bank, World Resources Institute, and a private consulting company. During that period he was engaged in project design and evaluation, managed a large integrated rural development project in Congo, and conducted applied research on local organizations, project management and administration, and natural resource management.

At the Elliott School, he offered graduate courses on development theory, policy, and practice; and in the Anthropology Department, courses on the anthropology of development and Latin America. From 1996 to 2008, he directed the Elliott School's MA program in International Development Studies.
