Sudhir Shetty spent most of his professional career at the World Bank, retiring in 2019 as its Chief Economist for East Asia and the Pacific. Since then, he has been a Non-Resident Fellow at the Center for Global Development (until 2022), and has consulted for various organizations. While at the World Bank, Mr Shetty held a number of other positions in its Africa and East Asia and Pacific regions, including as Director of the Poverty Reduction and Economic Management department in both regions. He was also Co-Director for the World Bank’s 2012 World Development Report on Gender Equality and Development. His professional interests include Asian and African development, development finance, climate change and gender equality.


Ph.D. in Economics, Cornell University; MBA, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad; BA (Hons.) in Economics, Bombay University.
