A native of Virginia Beach, VA, LCDR Dominik Wermus graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 2010 with Bachelor of Science degrees in Physics and Applied Mathematics. He received his commission through Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI in September 2010. 

After completion of the Nuclear Submarine Junior Officer pipeline, LCDR Wermus conducted his Division Officer tour aboard USS OHIO (SSGN 726) (GOLD), homeported in Bremerton, Washington and forward deployed to Guam as the Reactor Control Assistant, Strike Officer, and Special Operations Forces Officer. During his tour he completed two Western Pacific deployments in support of Joint Special Operations Task Force – Philippines and national-level tasking. He is qualified as a Naval Reactors Nuclear Engineer. 

LCDR Wermus transitioned to the Navy Reserves in 2016, beginning at the Undersea Warfare Office in Washington, DC, then as Executive Officer for Expeditionary Maintenance Detachment A in Annapolis, MD. He served as a Theater Anti-Submarine Warfare Watch Officer supporting operations at CTF-84 in Norfolk, VA and conducted over 40 Funeral Honors Details for veterans laid to rest in the Washington, DC area. 

LCDR Wermus volunteered for Mobilization in 2019 with the Special Operations Joint Task Force – Afghanistan, first as the Current Operations Director, before becoming the Deputy Chief Technology Officer leading implementation of an Artificial Intelligence – enabled Mission Command system for all Joint, Coalition, and Local National forces in theater. LCDR Wermus then volunteered for a follow-on active duty assignment in 2020 with the Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence with Project Maven as the AOIC for Artificial Intelligence for Medium Altitude ISR. All these capabilities are still used throughout the Defense Intelligence Enterprise. LCDR Wermus then served Reserve capacity with OPNAV N3/N5 as a Battle Watch Captain at the National Military Command Center’s Navy Operations Center, acting as a conduit of information for the Secretary of the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations on ongoing operations across the globe. He now serves as the Commanding Officer of the Reserve unit supporting Naval Support Activity in Naples, Italy and has been selected for the rank of Commander. 

In the civilian world, LCDR Wermus is a Program Manager at Anduril Industries, leading development of Autonomous systems for the Department of Defense. He completed his Master of Science degree in Information Systems from Johns Hopkins University in May 2018. 

LCDR Wermus is a Joint Qualified Level II Officer. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, two Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, and two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. He resides with his wife, Rui, and his two daughters, Lenna and Sarissa, in Falls Church, VA.
