The Elliott School was honored last month to host both retired Army general, David Petraeus, and Moussa Faki Mahamat, the new chair of the African Union Commission. General Petraeus spoke on the surge in Iraq ten years after. African Union Chair Faki spoke about affairs on the African continent, particularly the apparent coup in Zimbabwe and conflict in Niger, where four U.S. soldiers were recently killed in an ambush.

As the US marked the 10th Anniversary of the Surge in Iraq, the Elliott School convened a high-powered panel discussion focused on the surge and its ripple effect. Keynoted by retired Army General David Petraeus, the event brought together five experts in security and conflict to provide multiple points of view. Several Elliott School professors joined the panel, including Stephen Biddle, a member of General Petraeus’ Joint Strategic Assessment Team in Baghdad during the surge. African Union Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat
A day after the startling arrest of long-time Zimbabwean Prime Minister Robert Mugabe, the Elliott School hosted Moussa Faki Mahamat, chair of the African Union Commission, who made time for our students during his inaugural visit to the US. Mr. Maki’s talk, directly following the political drama in Zimbabwe, offered students immediate insight into breaking news.
