Taiwan Education and Research Program

Mission:

The Taiwan Education and Research Program seeks to advance academic and policy-related education and research on the history, international relations, and the contemporary political, economic and social development of Taiwan.

Justification:

The need for more focused and advanced study of Taiwan arises from Taiwan's unique international position and internal development. Taiwan's troubled relationship with the People's Republic of China remains a key issue affecting the foreign policy of the United States and creates broader security concerns for the entire Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, Taiwan's distinctive experience in areas such as democratization and economic development has made Taiwan a model for other societies and a rich field for comparative study. The Taiwan Education and Research Program was therefore established to help promote and support both academic and policy-related study leading to a better understanding of Taiwan's internal development and its position in the world.

Objectives:

• To provide a base for education and research on Taiwan through the establishment of a Taiwan Resource Center (TRC) within GW's Gelman Library for a specialized collection of Chinese and English-language materials on Taiwan's history, society, and politics
• To support research on Taiwan by providing assistance to scholars using the TRC.
• To serve as an information center and contact network for students, academics, and members of the policy community through both personal and online services
• To collaborate with other GW units and other local, regional, and international organizations to offer seminars, conferences, and presentations on Taiwan

The Taiwan Education and Research Program is affiliated with the Sigur Center for Asian Studies in the Elliott School of International Affairs.
