William Cohen was Secretary of Defense from 1997 to 2001.
He previously served three terms in the U.S. Senate and three terms in
the House of Representatives (Maine). During his tenure on Capitol Hill,
he served on the Senate Armed Services and Governmental Affairs Committees
and was Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
Cohen holds a BA in Latin from Bowdoin College and a LL.B. from Boston
University Law School.
The Robert J. Pelosky, Jr. Distinguished Speaker Series
was founded to assist in attracting leading scholars and practitioners
to the Elliott School to address key international issues facing the United
States. Pelosky is a managing director and global strategist for Morgan
Stanley Dean Witter in New York, where he focuses on asset allocation
and sector/stock selection. He holds an undergraduate degree from Duke
University and a master's degree in international affairs from GW.
This past fall, Pelosky assumed the role of Chairman of
the Elliott School's International Council, at which time he announced
his plans to "focus on the issue of visibility." His goal, like that of
Dean Harry Harding, is to help the Elliott School to assume its place
as a pre-eminent institution in its field. "As an alum, I know that the
Elliott School offers its students a great opportunity to learn and grow
amongst some of the world's ablest practitioners of international affairs,"
Pelosky said. "I am excited to work with Dean Harding and the International
Council to help raise the visibility of the Elliott School and its work."
Elliott School Dean Harry Harding expressed his gratitude
about Pelosky's gift. "We are honored by Pelosky's generosity," he said.
"The establishment of this speaker series will be instrumental in the
continuing efforts of the Elliott School to lead the field of international
affairs. Jay Pelosky has supported the Elliott School not only financially,
but through his leadership, and we welcome his continued input as we seek
to raise the visibility of the school."
